Thank You to Rep. George Miller
Representative George Miller (D-CA), a tireless advocate for education technology, announced his retirement earlier this week. As we reflected on Rep. Miller’s accomplishments, we became newly aware of the profound impact he had during his 40 years in politics.
Rep. Miller is a past winner of CoSN’s Award for Excellence in Public Service, which recognizes an official whose work has most improved K-12 learning through the use of technology. We’re proud to have worked with Rep. Miller towards our mutual policy and advocacy goals.
Since his election to Congress in 1974, Miller has served as a leader on nearly every significant education development, working to enact bipartisan and broad-ranging solutions. He’s the key author of crucial legislation including the No Child Left Behind Act and the education portion of 2009’s stimulus, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. He’s argued consistently for metric-driven assessments and grant programs such as Race to the Top and Investing in Innovation. Nearest and dearest to our hearts, he has been a strong believer in the power of education technology throughout his career, culminating in his proposal of the Transforming Education Through Technology Act. Many of Miller’s policy visions have yet to be realized, but he has certainly given his successors a running start.
To Rep. Miller: congratulations and thank you!! We at CoSN and the entire ed tech community will miss you.
