Dr. Tom Ryan currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the eLearn Institute. The eLearn Institute is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to transforming education through the effective use of digital learning tools. It is the mission of the eLearn Institute to empower schools to design, develop, and implement their own quality eLearning programs that transform education for all learners by expanding access to and use of eLearning resources and relationships.
He has a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Learning Technologies from New Mexico State University. He retired from the Albuquerque Public Schools in the fall of 2011 after serving for 31 years in public education as a teacher, high school principal and the last 11 years a Chief Information Officer (CIO). As CIO he was responsible for both instructional and information technology. He helped lead the creation of eCademy, which is the district’s first blended and online school that has received national recognition. He also led efforts to create IDEAL-NM, which is the state online program.
Dr. Ryan is a national board member of the Consortium of School Network (CoSN) and a Senior Fellow with the Center for Digital Education. He is also a member of several statewide boards including the president of NMSTE, which is a New Mexico ISTE affiliate. He has served as adjunct faculty for UNM designing and teaching courses online. He works with several national committees such as iNACOL, and the Council of Great City Schools.
As the former principal of Del Norte High School, Tom received a Milken Educator Award. He has received several awards for technology innovation and has presented at several conferences across the country.
