A scalable train-the-trainer model for guiding school districts in strategic planning on generative AI

The Building Capacity for Generative AI in K-12 Education project equips school systems with the tools, training, and support needed to approach generative AI thoughtfully and strategically. Designed to serve districts of all sizes and contexts, the initiative helps education leaders evaluate their readiness across seven key areas—including leadership, operations, data, technology, security, legal considerations, and academic AI literacy. Through a scalable train-the-trainer model, participants gain guidance in assessing current capabilities, identifying future goals, and taking actionable steps toward implementation—all grounded in the CoSN/CGCS K-12 Gen AI Maturity Tool.

Key activities of the project include:

  • Training a cohort of Lead Trainers at the national level.
  • In partnership with the Association of Education Service Agencies (AESA), hosting four regional Train-the-Trainer sessions to train additional cohorts of Regional Trainers who, in turn, will provide ongoing training to local school districts, with special emphasis on reaching under-resourced and rural districts.
  • Hosting three Gen AI Maturity Summits for district teams targeting medium and large school districts. The summits will focus on building awareness of the CoSN/CGCS K-12 Gen AI Maturity Tool and how it can be used by districts along with resources, insights and strategies for harnessing the power of generative AI.

Lead Trainers

The Building Capacity for Generative AI in K-12 Education project is designed for national reach through a tiered, scalable training model. Twelve Lead Trainers, selected for their knowledge and expertise in key areas including generative AI, facilitation, district leadership, technology implementation, and adult learning, are central to the success of this initiative. They collaborate on developing and refining the training content and help ensure it is applicable and approachable for school districts across diverse contexts. In addition, they deliver Regional Train-the-Trainer events and mentor cohorts of Regional Trainers who will extend the program’s impact nationwide.
