Certification Beta Test

Last year, CoSN completed a job analysis to examine the growing field of education technology leadership. The outcome of that project was the updated Framework of Essential Skills of the K-12 CTO to match the changes in the student learning environment and a renewed focus on our CETL® certification program. As a result, we are currently working to update the CETL® exam to bring it in line with these changes as well.

Where and when can I take the beta exam?

We are currently working with our affiliates nationwide to determine testing locations and times between October 15 and November 6.

CETL® Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must, at a minimum, have a bachelor’s degree plus four years of education technology experience. Education technology experience is defined as demonstrable experience in the three primary professional categories of the Framework, which are: Leadership & Vision; Understanding the Educational Environment; and Managing Technology & Support Services.

If the candidate does not have a bachelor’s degree, s/he must have at least seven years of demonstrable experience in education technology and appeal to the Certification Governance Committee, in writing, with an explanation of this experience and a signed recommendation from the candidate’s supervisor.

What does the updated CETL exam look like?

Beginning with the beta exam and all exams administered after February 14, 2020, a new content area of Data Privacy has been added to bring the exam in line with the updated Framework of Essential Skills of the K-12 CTO. The exam is broken down into three (3) content areas:

Leadership and Vision (36%)
Understanding the Educational Environment (33%)
Managing Technology and Support Resources (31%)
